Small village waits decades for power

Twelve families in the small village of Ban Nong Phai Yai in Sakon Nakhon province have have been waiting for electricity for over two decades, and are wondering if the endless delay is just part of a plan by the authorities to erase their community.

Khaosod on Friday reported on the living conditions of people in the small village in Na Kaeo sub-district of Phon Na Kaeo district.

Grandma Kawee Nampha, 70, said the community had been founded about 60 years ago. Phon Na Kaeo district was later established and people of the village were glad, expecting development as the new district office was only two kilometres away.

Instead, they still live without a power supply and continue to depend on oil lamps for lighting.

Pom Jaireu, 53, said students had to use oil lamps to read and do their homework.

The families had first requested the local electricity authority to run power lines to the village about 25 years ago, but to no avail. Every time they asked the authorities only told them they would have to wait.

The people had neither television nor mobile phones, because they had no electricity to power or charge such devices, and their only communication with the outside world was battery powered radio, Mrs Pom said.

Rad Phangcha, 80, said that whenever someone dies, they have to rent a generator for the funeral rites.

Prawit Suporn, 44, said he found out his name had been moved to another village without his knowledge, and that former district chiefs said they did not want Ban Nong Phai Yai to exist.

Although only two kilometres apart, the village and the Phon Na Kaeo district office are separated by a hardwood forest, and linked with a dirt road.
